I wanted to share with you a local, sustainable eatery that I was able to visit during my time in Adelaide. The Seasonal Garden Café is located in Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills. Hahndorf is a gorgeous little “country” town, if maybe a bit touristy. This was my first time at this cute little restaurant but my mum loves to go here for lunch or coffee. So this is a bit of a “review”/overview of the Seasonal Garden Café…
This gorgeous café uses only organic, locally sourced produce and their menu changes depending on the season and what’s available. They have their own garden, but also buy produce from local farmers (support small business yay!). I think more people need to be conscious about eating seasonally as it certainly cuts down on the carbon footprint of your fruit and veg if you don’t have to have it flown in from all over the world just because you want a pineapple in the middle of winter. Our ancestors would have eaten seasonally since they didn’t really have airplanes, and they managed to survive! 😀
Even though the menu is local and seasonal, there’s still a huge range on offer! There are many vegan and vegetarian options, as well as gluten free (big tick from me!). Almost every item on the menu can be adapted to suit your needs. Every dish is so fresh and beautifully presented, and at prices that won’t break the bank! I would say prices are at pretty much the same level as any other café and you get much higher quality and nutritional food!
Another thing I love about this place is that they are as close to zero waste as possible! Anything that cannot be used in the kitchen goes out to feed the chickens which then lay eggs that are in turn, used in the kitchen. Circular economy/living yay! Because everything comes from local producers, there’s no need for ridiculous and unecessary packaging.
The café has a wonderful outdoor area, and you can wander through their garden to see what’s growing and what will be next on the menu.
Have you ever been to a café like this? If so, where?
Love,
